FuturePlaces

Digital media and its impact have changed dramatically since 2008, but the original motto of the FUTUREPLACES medialab for citizenship remains as relevant as ever: how can technology serve common good in local contexts and communities? This year we celebrate the 10th edition of FUTUREPLACES from October 17 to 21.

An event within the UTAustin-Portugal partnership, FUTUREPLACES is curated by FBAUP Professor Heitor Alvelos and includes a range of activities by FBAUP staff and students. Professor Doreen Lorenzo of UTAustin will be the opening speaker at the Digital Media Doctoral Symposium (October 17); twelve citizen labs will be on offer, covering a wide range of media use, exploration and reinvention; exhibitions include UTAustin-Portugal research posters, all FUTUREPLACES posters since 2008, and a selection of memorabilia from the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign curated by José Pacheco Pereira.

Night-time activities will include concerts in association with Rádio Manobras and Sonoscopia, short films in association with the Shortcutz network, and an open mic on “poetry and technology”. All will converge on Saturday the 21st for a presentation of outputs developed throughout the week. Portuguese Secretary of State for Science Fernanda Rollo will provide the closing address. All events are free, all are welcome; the full program will be available at futureplaces.org.
